BAI Review (Autumn 2023)

As a member of the BAI you will receive a quarterly Review.  Our Review is published for Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter and is usually at least 40 pages in length. It has interesting articles and useful information for both established iconographers and for those just starting out.  UK members will have a printed copy of the Review posted to them, while overseas members can opt to either have the printed Review posted  or an e-mailed version.
If you would like to join the BAI, please send an e-mail to the Membership Secretary at membership@bai.org.uk.  To contact the Review editor, please e-mail: editor@bai.org.uk

A Message from the Editor …

Dear Friends in the BAI family,

It is a pleasure to serve you. I learn so much.  The special event this Autumn was the BAI Exhibition of Members’ work, which was held in the north-west, in Liverpool. Aidan Hart gave a Talk, which is outlined in this Review, together with images. (see p5-19)

There will be more information and photos on the website – do take a look at all the beautiful work. As with all iconography, the weekend was surrounded by prayer and liturgy.

An article by a new member, who is an experienced iconographer, explains the background of Bulgarian Orthodoxy and how this has influenced her work, some of which is shown alongside.  As usual, there is a Meditation, which helps us to pray with the icon and to listen to God speaking to our personal needs. Some of you may be called to write your own icon after praying with one of Sr Esther’s Meditations.

The BAI website contains information about Workshops and Courses – all the dated material. I would urge you to check the website regularly.

Here in the Review, we aim to look at themes that are of interest to BAI Members of all backgrounds. We learn from each other. Do
continue to send in ideas, articles, questions…… We look at Orthodox icons, the inspiration of God’s call to write these icons, the history of icons, icons in liturgy, techniques …..

Praying for you all and sending every good wish for
a Blessed Advent and a Peaceful Christmas
Ann (BAI Editor – volunteer)
